Happy St. George's Day!

Did you know that in Barcelona, Catalunya today-- April 23rd-- is St. George's Day, a day to celebrate romance and love?

And while St. George may be the patron saint of England, it is Barcelona, Catalunya where his day is marked in truly memorable fashion. Whereas the UK and the US celebrates all that is romantic on St. Valentine's Day on February 14 each year, Barcelonans wait until April 23rd before getting amorous. They celebrate St. George's Day in style, with estimates suggesting that over four million roses are bought in the city on the day.

Tradition dictates that men buy their women a rose on this special day, but it is the men themselves who receive a more permanent present, as women are supposed to give their partner a book. Las Ramblas sells over 400,000 books on St. George's Day as a result, as the booksellers come out in force to remind the ladies of their duty.
